Children get cooking!
The face of the British breakfast could change for good if a new generation of schoolchildren get their way, according to Sainsbury’s. Inspired by the Active Kids Get Cooking initiative, it seems children of today would rather eat oriental pancakes and kedgeree for breakfast instead of cereals and toast.
The Active Kids Get Cooking Special Challenge asked schoolchildren to create healthy breakfasts recipes, and over 500 exotic recommendations were received from children across the UK. The move towards new and inspiring breakfasts is backed by Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, Ed Balls, who attended the judging of the top 12 finalists of the competition.
Ed Balls says: “We know that a healthy breakfast is vital to give children the best start to the day. And to get children interested in healthy eating and cooking we need to make it fun. That’s why I am delighted to support the Sainsbury’s Active Kids Get Cooking competition because it gives children the opportunity to show-off their talents in the kitchen as well as teaching them basic life skills. I want to see more children cooking healthy meals at home. We have recently published our second free cookbook for children, with picnic and packed lunch recipes so they can eat healthy meals when they are out and about this summer.
“We want to support all children and young people to lead healthy lives. We have seen a huge revolution in the quality of food at school, with massive investment to raise nutritional standards whilst keeping prices down.”
