Some of you may be wondering why you have not been able to renew or buy new print magazine subscriptions.

We’re sorry to say that because of the difficult economic climate we have had to take the decision not to continue with the print subscription of Nursery Education PLUS and Child Education PLUS. Unfortunately, both print and postage costs have increased over the past year and more and more of our subscribers have been moving their subscriptions online as they find this is the cheaper and greener option.

If you subscribe to either Nursery Education PLUS or Child Education PLUS you will soon be receiving a letter telling you when your last printed magazine issue will be. You will be either offered a refund on your subscription or you will be able to transfer your subscription to an online only subscription. Depending on how many issues you have left on your subscription you may be eligible for more than a year’s online subscription.

We know that many of you cherish your printed magazines and we are very sorry that we have been unable to sustain your monthly/bi-monthly read. We of course hope you are going to continue to enjoy our resource bank.

We will continue to send out regular emails to our subscribers telling you what’s new online and you’ll continue to get our regular giveaways and subscriber offers.

I am really sad to hear that the magazines are no longer to be available in a printed version. I first started to buy copies of Junior Education in about 1978 when I left Teacher Training college and I have found its various guises to contain very valuable resources over the years. I understand the reasoning behind the decision, but unlike my younger colleagues still prefer to curl up with a magazine and go back to items later rather have to sit looking at a screen. I am also reluctant to spend what becomes hours looking for things on-line. I will however continue with my subscription knowing that the resource bank will contain stuff that I will want to use. Any posibility of occasional specials with the advantage of professional colour printing? At our school colour printing is restricted and my printer at home is only A4. Thanks for many years of great resources.

@Sally Mottram – thank you for your kind words.

I’m sure that over the coming months we will be offering some ‘occasional specials’ both in terms of posters and guided reading leaflets, as well as the odd printed supplement too.

    Just watch this space.

Yes I agree with Sally it is sad to lose the printed version of the magazine. A choice of a printed version or the online version would be nice even if the price has to be increased. I will miss sitting in front of the telly and being able to read through my magazine in my own time rather than sitting in front of a computer screen. I also agree about the printing. I am now in two minds about renewing my subscription. I love the resource bank but I have most of that in the hard copies of my magazines anyway. As I pay for my own subscription I am wondering if the money could be better spent. Looks like a few of the magazines are going to the online version unfortunately.

I’m sad too to be losing the paper copy. I find it so hard to read long articles on the screen and certainly cannot curl up with a laptop! You had moved towards reinstating a fuller magazine after requests and now we are told we will have no copy at all. What a great shame.

    • Posted by: SylviaO on 10 May 2011 - 22:24

This is such a shame. I too prefer to have a paper copy which I can carry around with me to read such as when at the hairdressers or away from home. I agree with “choccy biccy” it is not easy to read long articles online.

    • Posted by: gailarnold on 23 May 2011 - 12:38

I too am sad about losing the printed copy of the magazine as I carry it around with me, reading it and referring to it wherever I am. I also share articles and ideas with colleagues and use the large posters etc all of the time. I only have an A4 printer which will make large posters now unavailable to me. I will continue with my subscription and see how I get on though!

    • Posted by: maisie on 25 May 2011 - 14:32

Like all of the above comments I to am sad to see the demise of the printed magazine. It is definately not the same doing it on line and as we have limited access to computers it is sometimes difficult for us to do this. I have valued the magazine over the years and the bright colourful posters and other resources have been a godsend to a small group with limited monetary resources. Will miss my monthly fix of the magazine very much.

Having used and cherished Child Ed for as long as I can remember, I will greatly miss the magazine for all the reasons mentioned by other people. Sadly losing the magazine is not progress but reality – how sad!

    • Posted by: ricangel on 25 May 2011 - 17:53

I am also sooooo sorry to lose the printed version. I have collected the nursery mag right from the first addition. They are lined up in my office and are used almost every day. AND what are we going to do without all those lovely posters? Isn’t there any way you can do?

    • Posted by: dianaalice on 26 May 2011 - 16:42

Me too ! I’m gutted at the thought of no more Nursery Ed., magazines. My minded kids will miss the posters most of all. They used to look forward to the next ones just as much as I did. It was the best “comfort magazine” around and I really don’t know which other one to move on to. Here’s hoping for a miracle.

tragic…..cant beat a real resource in your hand rather than endless online folders of cyber stuff :(

    • Posted by: gillianrc on 11 June 2011 - 18:00

I can’t find anybody who wants it to go on line only – have Scholastic researched this decision. i would be prepared to pay a bit more in return for the printed version. No amount of downloading will replace the very useful posters and not many people have access to A3 colour printers. Acvtually, cost of postage hasn’t gone up so much – I would be happy to pay the extra postage. I find looking for articles on the website very time consuming, fiddly and not nearly as accessible as the paper copies. There’s a maket for a replacement here. If I had the expertise I wouyld go for it!

Just read all the comments about online magazine and agree totally. we are all short of time to go on line and look for resources and so the mag was a great place to start for ideas. Will miss this monthly read. Ive not renewed my subscription and am sure that many more will be like me. please re think!!

I feel so let down by the magazine for doing this to their loyal subscribers. It was a fantastic magazine and was invaluable. I say was, as I can see this being the end for the magazine. I relied on it so much as a basis for my monthly planning and I now feel lost. It wouldn’t be as bad if it was in a format online that was like a magazine. I.e so you are able to turn pages. They use this format in another magazine I subscribe to ‘The essential childminder magazine’ and it works really well. What was the real reason for online only, as the readers were never consulted?

    • Posted by: Pippilongstocking on 18 June 2011 - 13:15

I’m disappointed too. I dont have access to a good colour printer and scrolling through pages looking for resources online is just not the same. I would be prepared to pay a little bit more to continue with a paper version.

    • Posted by: jill64 on 19 June 2011 - 20:44

What a big loss this is – it was a godsend and invaluable help with my planning – it made life just that little bit easier knowing all that knowledge was just waiting to be read. I always looked forward to receiving my copy, enjoyed the luxury of being able to pick it up and put it down as and when, the thought of having to sit in front of a computer now fills me with dread. Please re-think.

    • Posted by: Actonian on 23 June 2011 - 13:02

I agree with every one of the comments above. Trying to read long articles on the screen is just not possible! I find the computer screen does not scroll smoothly, thus making reading anything very difficult. Why have Scholastic taken such an unpopular decision? Do they really think that we mant to sit at a computer screen trying to find resources or read articles? I can’t take my laptop into the bath to read can I? Please think again Scholastic – we would all be prepared to pay a bit more for a REAL magazine!

    • Posted by: redfred on 24 June 2011 - 20:27

I think that the online edition is great. You can print as many copies of the poster as you need and if they get lost or torn you can easily get another copy. If you want to read a hard copy there’s no problem with just printing one. I’ve been printing resources for over a year and keeping an original set (just like having the magazine!) for future reference. The ‘My folder’ is great because you delete/upload resources as you require them. The interactive games I upload into a folder on my desktop so they are all there for use on the interactive whiteboard. finding resources is so easy – a quick search and they are all there instantly. I love the online editions.

    • Posted by: emjo on 30 June 2011 - 18:29

i have found the printed copies valuable for my setting and also the articels that are inside have hlped me in my further training, i will still keep me subcription up in hope that the magazines will come back

    • Posted by: EvieT on 05 July 2011 - 11:57

I have been using the printed magazine for some years and have found the resources to be invaluable to my setting. The posters, in particular were brilliant and we used to print up a4 copies for additionl resources and dinner/craft mats. At lot of your resources seem to be missing and that is very sad :(

    • Posted by: mich on 08 July 2011 - 21:51

It is a shame there will be no more printed magazine and will miss the posters most of all, have been invaluable to my setting, might not find it as easy to print them out online. However I’m sure will get used to reading articles and finding resources online and will be able to choose what want to access, on the plus side will save space at home not having to store magazines

    • Posted by: Chrish on 09 July 2011 - 14:52

is it only the subscriptions that have been stoped or will I no longer be able to get it at the news agents aswell?

    • Posted by: Tim Major, Editor on 11 July 2011 - 11:54

@Chrish – the print versions of both Child Education and Nursery Education have now been discontinued, so Nursery Ed isn’t available in shops. The new online subscription allows you access to content from previous print issues as well as interactive whiteboard and printable resources, plus new resources, features and ideas published online each week.

    • Posted by: mitzykitzy on 12 July 2011 - 15:16

I agree with virtually all of the comments above. I had only just started getting the magazine after several years without it. I work in Spain and we have very few physical resources. The posters were always great a few years back and still were my second time round. The online resources are also fantastic but will really miss the posters, who has an A3 printer ? Would pay a bit more for the posters. I don’t remember a customer consultation, perhaps it was before my subscription started again ? Good luck with new format.

    • Posted by: dianaalice on 15 July 2011 - 20:30

Am I missing something here? even if I had the relevent printer I haven’t found any new posters! I am really really missing the magazine and the posters and I cann’t find a way to print out the articles without lots of other unwanted material being printed along side. Ps. have the planning sheets gone too?
