In our setting we have a heavy weighted boy/girl ratio. At every session there are at least 17 boys to 5 girls. The boys seem to love running indoors, roaring with the dinosaurs, tippping boxes out into our role play ship to name but a few. We try keyworker activities and the boys sustain interest for approx 10mins, but once that has finished they seem to be off again roaring/shouting. We tried rotating groups but have been told by our early years adviser that it was far too structured and not enough time for child initiated. We have had many staff meetings over this and tried many different activities. Has anyone got any suggestions. From a very grey haired (not yet bald) staff member!
Hi We had the same problem. Staff attended a course specifically aimed at boys and the way in which they learn. Many activities were introduced. staff focused on a super hero theme-comics, masks, discussions were held with the boys, computer activities and much more. We also completed alot of tasks within the outdoor environment. Boys tend to loose concentration quickly so we introduced activities which would help extend this whilst focusing on CLL – threading cards, comics of their choice, obstacle courses, playdough with super hero mats. Staff observed which area wasn’t being used effectively by the boys and introduced new activities within these areas following their interests. We found that by working with the boys and introducing many activities which concentrated on fine manipulative skills helped lots.

You have probably done all this already but you haven’t given much of a clue of what you have tried. Firstly I would be observing the boys to see if it was a particular individual/s who spark the disruptive/unwanted behaviour or an occurance. With that many boys they probably just set one another off. Secondly I would be looking to see if they know how to play. If not they will then need to be shown what to do in the role play. Thirdly I would have adults ready to step in before the disruption starts with items that would enhance what ever they are doing to take it a step further to try and retain the interest, but hopefully spark some imagination from the children. Then step back and let the children take over again. But also I would give them a time and a place where they could roar and run to let off their steam and not accept it at any other time.
