This case study of a nursery that created their very own library area offers inspiring ideas for encouraging children to be lifelong readers and promoting Communication, Language and Literacy.

In April 2009, I was fortunate to be offered a place to visit Reggio Emilia, Italy, as part of the Norfolk County Council, Early Professional Status Network Group. I was inspired by a drama room in the Otello Sarzi Infant Toddler Centre, called a ‘drama atelier’. I decided that it was something I wanted to create at some point in the future.

The opportunity arose at the House of Fun Nursery in Gorleston, where I am the children’s centre teacher. The nursery contained a redundant room, which was originally used as a baby room for the under ones, however, the room was not ideal for this purpose since there was no natural light. As a result, the babies were combined with the rest of the under twos in the adjoining area, which was much bigger and also had windows and access to outdoors. Consequently, this room was only used for additional storage.

On speaking to the nursery manager and the staff, it was apparent that everyone thought this room was being under used. From the Foundation Stage Profile Results of the primary schools within the nursery’s catchment area, it was also evident that Communication, Language and Literacy were below the national average. As a team, we decided that our project to revamp this room should work in tandem with improving these results. Therefore, we chose to create our very own library area in our nursery.
