A creative approach
The bell rings for lunch time at Lillian de Lissa Nursery School but instead of heading straight off to eat, the children recognise it as the signal to sit down and gently massage each other for a few moments.
‘There was a lot of aggression among our children last year’, explains Lorna Rose, an artist who works at the school three days a week. ‘Some staff had read about the benefits of peer massage and decided they wanted to give it a go. We taught the children that they had to use a special kind of touch that doesn’t hurt and to choose a partner by asking “Can I touch you?” It proved so effective in combating aggressive behaviour that we’ve kept it up.’
This is a perfect example of how staff at the school, which is situated close to Birmingham city centre, think creatively to solve problems and perhaps explains why it is a Creative Partnerships School of Creativity. There are 55 of these in the country but only four are nursery schools.
