The winner of the 2008 Primary Language Teacher Award shows that children must have an understanding of their own identity before looking at other countries.

Children holding a globe

When teaching a modern foreign language, it is important to first get your children to look at their own language including accents, dialects and also the different languages spoken within the community. If children can have an appreciation of the diversity and cultural richness already present in their own lives and the wider community, a modern foreign language may not seem so alien to them.
