Encourage children to explore some of London’s most famous buildings and landmarks.
Meet the landmarks
Show pupils the selection of images of London landmarks on the Slideshow, ‘London landmarks’. Have any of the pupils visited one of them?
Talk about the different purposes that buildings have (for example, as places to live, work, be entertained, receive medical treatment, govern, commemorate or worship). Discuss what makes a structure or place a tourist attraction (for example, beauty or historical significance).
Talk about the different materials that have been used to make each landmark (for example, stone, wood, glass, metal). Why have these been chosen? KS2 pupils could complete Activity sheet, ‘London landmarks quiz’. Help KS1 pupils build up a vocabulary of words used to describe the landmarks (tall, shiny, historical, beautiful, interesting) and write these on the board. Ask them to write sentences including one or two of these words.
Talk about how we use maps and the type of features found on a map (for example, scale, key, grid references, compass points).
Give KS2 pupils a map of London. Ask pupils to work in pairs to locate each landmark on the map and write down its map reference coordinates.
Talk about the use of compass points for direction and talk through several examples. Ask pupils to write five sentences demonstrating their knowledge of compass directions (for example, ‘Trafalgar Square is to the north-west of the London Eye.’). Discuss the use of scales on maps. As pupils to use their rulers to measure and write down the distance between three pairs of landmarks.
