Use a traditional Japanese story as the stimulus for map-reading activities

CHANGE ME

Learning objective: to use everyday words and mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement.

You will need

Map of Ogre Islands (see A1 poster); copies of the Ogre Islands activity sheet (see back of A1 poster) and the story of Momotaro the Peach Boy (see inside front cover and inside back cover).

Whole class

The following maths activities are inspired by the story of Momotaro the Peach Boy, and offer opportunities for children to develop their understanding of shape, space and movement. As they sail around the Ogre Islands, Reception children will experiment with vocabulary that describes position, direction and movement; those in Year 1 will be challenged to follow instructions that lead them on their brave journey, while Year 2 children will be responsible for guiding each other safely back from the Ogres’ fortress.
