This article is all about Mayan civilisation. A named topic on the KS2 History programme of study that many of us find difficult to resource.

Mayans

The 2014 Primary History curriculum requires KS2 pupils to study ‘a non-European society that provides contrasts with British history’. One of those suggested in the National Curriculum is the Mayan civilisation from around AD 250 to 900, which is usually referred to by historians as its classical period.

Studying this topic gives children an opportunity to explore a fascinating society, giving them a glimpse of their lifestyle, food and culture, their interesting beliefs and their mathematical systems, as well as considering how historical evidence can be obtained from artefacts, buildings and historical secondary sources.
