Move over Barnaby Bear – give your QCA topic ‘Where in the world…’ a new lease of life with the fun adventures of two loveable kangaroos!

When Hoppy and Poppy discover an opportunity to escape from their zoo near London, they set out on an exciting adventure that takes them half way round the world to their home in Australia. Children can follow the character’s adventures, providing opportunity for them to find out about different places in the world and different forms of transport.

How to use the story

Gather the children in a circle. Stick enlarged versions of the transport cards (see linked activity sheet below) to the flipchart/whiteboard and ask the children to name the different vehicles that they can see. Now read the story of Hoppy and Poppy (see below). Each time you reach a blank space, indicate for the children to use the transport sheet to choose a method of transport. Encourage the children to discuss their ideas. As the kangaroos journey to different countries, use a map to find the locations mentioned, using stickers or flags to mark each stage of the journey.
