This year, the theme for the British Nutrition Foundation’s (BNF) Healthy Eating Week (12–16 June) is ‘applied learning’. The Week will focus on building children’s knowledge about healthy eating and wellbeing, being active, food provenance and cooking. Children will be encouraged to take ownership for their own health, making positive decisions on their own.

Over the duration of Healthy Eating Week, school and nursery children will have a set of five health challenges to complete: Have breakfast, 5 a day, Drink plenty, Get active and Try something new. This year children can also apply to become BNF Healthy Eating Week Ambassadors, championing the week in their own schools and at home. Ambassadors will be asked to encourage others to take part in the challenges, and help plan activities to make their challenges fun and engaging.

Millions of children will be involved in the BNF Health Eating Week activities, and all schools and nurseries registered will benefit from a variety of complimentary resources, including: a board game, activity ideas, and posters – all designed to boost children’s understanding of healthy eating. Online presentations and cooking sessions will also take place.

  • Parent and student cooking workshops
  • Healthy eating workshops
  • Food tasting
  • Whole school assemblies
  • Renting smoothie bikes
  • Healthy tuck shops
  • Try it Friday – promoting trying new things
  • Healthy picnic lunches
  • Visiting a farm or shop
  • Creating a healthy dish to be made by the canteen competition

So far, more than 7900 nurseries and schools have registered to take part, representing over 3.6 million children. Registration for the week only takes a few minutes and it is a great way for your school or nursery to show its support for, and raise the profile of healthy, active lifestyles.
