Working towards Early Years Professional Status

Beth Edohasim has recently trained for the Early Years Professional Status. Here she shares her story…
The first five years of a child’s life are critical to their development. High-quality early years care and education can help children to achieve their potential. Those people who are currently training to gain Early Years Professional Status (EYPS) come from a wide range of backgrounds with differing skills, experiences and qualifications. But they all have the same things in common. They are all committed, resilient, enthusiastic and determined, with a single vision, which is to make a real difference to the lives of babies, young children and their families.
Training to be an Early Years Professional
Studying for the EYPS has been a very challenging, but enjoyable experience. I finished my first work placement in a nursery class at a maintained primary school, then went to a private day nursery for my second placement. The training towards achieving EYPS includes taking a leadership and management course, resulting in a Diploma in Leadership and Management. To achieve the Diploma, you have to carry out a work-based assignment in your placement setting.
My assignment focused on improving the resources in the outdoor numeracy area of the nursery. The assignment was very hands-on and practical and gave me an opportunity to make an input to the children’s learning and help them towards achieving the Early learning goal in Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy.
The Gateway Review
Another part of the course is called the Gateway Review, and this must be passed in order to proceed to the next stage. This consists of several different tasks including: a role-play interview with an actor to discuss an imaginary staffing problem; a personal interview; an in-tray exercise in which I had to prioritise a variety of tasks, state what I wanted to do, how and why, and identify any underlying issues within the different scenarios; a presentation that I had to give on a change or improvement that I have effected within my placement setting; and a follow-on discussion analysing and identifying three factors that made for an effective change.
