Before carrying out these activities, ask for parental permission for the children to taste and handle foods. Check for any food allergies and dietary requirements. Provide aprons and ask the children to wash their hands.
Cut a large slit lengthwise in the top of a hot dog roll. Tip a small tin of baked beans into a bowl and let the children stir in some Worcestershire sauce and extra tomato sauce. Then place the beans on top of the roll. Serve the beans cold or heat them in a microwave, if available.
Cut cucumber or pickled gherkins into small strips to create a ladder, or pre cut a ladder from cucumber, and invite the children to place it on top of the fire engine.
Encourage the children to carefully attach slices of cooked sausage or chorizo as wheels to the fire engine using blunt-ended cocktail sticks.
