Exploring Media and Materials

Development matters: begin to be interested in and describe the texture of things (30-50 months); experiment to create different textures (40-60+ months).

Early learning goal: explore colour, texture, shape, form and space in two or three dimensions.

What you need

Group size: small groups.

‘Dog mask’, ‘Rabbit mask’, ‘Cat mask’ and ‘Fish mask’ activity sheets; child scissors; elastic; different-coloured and textured materials, felt; tissue-paper; glue.

What to do

Make enlarged copies of the activity sheets. Invite the children to choose a pet mask to decorate, and cut it out.

Encourage the children to look at the colours of the materials available and feel the different textures. Ask questions such as ‘Which material colours remind you of different types of dogs?’, ‘Which fabric feels soft like a rabbit?’, Which material would be best for a fish?’, and so on.

Show the children how to manipulate the materials to achieve different-textured effects, for example, scrunching, quilling and fraying.

When the children have decorated their masks, attach some elastic to each side so that the children can wear them during role play or outdoor play.
