    Fantastic Resource!

For several years I have used this as a starting point for work on Adventure Writing. We have written applications to join the crew, "lived" the story, written our own ship's log (first hand recounts), learnt about story structure, written our own endings using the story structure, looked at cliffhangers, similes, adjectives, adverbs and writing for pace, and interviewed the main characters and created character profiles. In all the activities that grew from this stimulus, we had huge fun whilst learning. I also created individual new character Pirate Crew cards with facts and figures on them which we used extensively in maths work involving all 4 calculations, logical processes and real problem solving. We worked out the gold we might carry back to the ship and conversion rates to pounds, and used real money problem solving to spend the pirate gold on pirate themed items. We even looked at co-ordinates and fractions, creating our own fraction island. This "active drama" took us on a richly educational adventure. It was an inspiration.
