Teachers’ notes: Look at a simple recipe book and talk about what it tells us. Read the poem to the children and ask, Why has the poet used this title? Find the recipe words that tell us what to do, for example, take, add, mix and bake. Can the children think of any more? Discuss the things you would need to build a sandcastle, such as lots of waves, sea-water and so on. Invite the class to create a new recipe poem, keeping to the three-line format of the original.
